I change the profile on my phone at least twice a day. I have a night mode, a normal mode, vibrate and silent. But what does changing the profile do? It really only changes the ring tone/volume and some other sounds the phone makes. Profiles need to be more advanced then that. Nokia recently added a feature to their E71 called Switch. It is what I’m talking about here, but it only gives you 2 profiles to switch between. They advertised it as acting like a work and personal profile. That’s great an all but my life has more complexity then 2 profiles.
Hold on a second, let me tell you more about what I’m getting at. We should be able to change the shortcuts associated with buttons on the phone and any shortcut icons on the home screen. For example when I’m working I may want VOIP, IM, Calendar, contacts, and SMS available. When I’m in the car or out walking I want maps, IM, SMS, contacts, camera/video, etc available. Do you see what I’m getting at, in different situations I want different apps available to me quickly. Just like in different situations I want my phone to ring at different volumes.
This is more then just useful, I think it’s needed. I am tiered of having to go deep into my applications menu to pull up Nokia Maps. It’s an app I only use once or twice a week so I don’t keep it as one of my valued shortcuts that I use every day. Now let’s just imagine something, these phones have GPS and accelerometers, so why don’t they know when I’m moving and automatically switch to driving mode if I’m going more then 10 mph. Why does it not switch to work mode when I’m with in range of the wireless router? Or when I’m at my geo tagged location named home and it’s after 9pm the phone should automatically switch to night mode. Come on people this is simple stuff according to a programer friend of mine.
What are we waiting for, this is 2009 and we still have the same profile options on my Nokia smart phone as I did 10 years ago with my Nokia 6190.
Becasue outside of a few 3rd party applications, the idea of a user interface that responds to you is not well researched and is still a cludge (see that Mode Switch option on the latest E-series devices).
I would recommend a few things:
- an application like T9 Nav or SkyQKey to get to apps and numbers quickly right from the Active Standby
- the use of any of the dozen or so applications out there that change things like themes, sounds, and app availablity, going as far as launching some apps, when you hit a particular time period or GPS coordinate.
- shouting a lot louder to the mobile developer and marketing commnity who look at this kind of usage as something far off in the future and not something possible now.
